Like so many Australians, I was shocked when I saw the brilliant ABC documentary “The War on Waste”.
Who knew that the humble single use coffee cup could have such a devastating impact on our environment? Nine hundred million of these things are being bulldozed into landfill every single year! Now, I love a cup of Java like the next man but knowing that my single use cup couldn’t be recycled gave my morning heart starter a distinctly bitter aftertaste.
At the time, I was looking for a new business, so I set out to track down the ideal reusable cup. I soon settled on bamboo cups.
I wanted a to work to a price point. There had to be a healthy profit for the cafe proprietor or whoever is going to be the reseller. I wanted a product that would work as an impulse ‘point of sale’ purchase. I wanted something cheerful and eye catching. Most of all, I wanted a product that would be kind to our environment.
Obviously, plastic was out. Cheap plastics will taint the flavour of the coffee. Many plastics will leach BPA when heat is applied, you really don’t need that! Furthermore, nothing lasts forever and eventually, your plastic coffee cup will be landfill.
I looked at borosilicate glass “Keep cups”. They are nice, but they’re so expensive, they just didn’t fit into my impulse purchase model. They’re also very fragile.
And then I discovered bamboo! It’s the perfect product. BAMBOOSTERS cups are made from powdered bamboo suspended in a food grade organic resin. Bamboo is a fast growing, sustainable crop. It has thousands of uses, it’s a crop that sustains countless communities around the world. Best of all, it’s biodegradable.
BAMBOOSTERS reusable coffee cups are durable and will last indefinitely if treated with care, but when the time comes to replace your cup, it will break down and return to the soil in 2-3 years.
BAMBOOSTERS cups won’t taint the flavour of your beverage, they’re sturdy and durable, they’re free of BPA and phthalate, they’re also dishwasher safe.
